Project Description and Heritage Context

The Parish of Lusmagh lies to the south of Banagher in the County of Offaly. Its unique geography means it is bounded on three sides by rivers, specifically the Shannon, the Little Brosna, and the Lusmagh, or Rapemills, River, essentially making it almost an island. The ancient name of the area, “Lusmagh,” means “Herb (lus) Plain (magh).” Development of amenity walks and outdoor recreation spaces, such as the Lusmagh Heritage Bog and Amenity Walk, is supported through initiatives like the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS), which Offaly Local Development Company is involved with.
