Introduction

The Job Initiative is a dedicated employment scheme designed to provide full-time work experience and professional development for individuals aged 35 and over. Delivered by OLDC on behalf of the Department of Social Protection, the programme bridges the gap between long-term unemployment and mainstream career opportunities.

Information

Participants on the Job Initiative are placed with local voluntary organisations, public bodies, and not-for-profit community groups. This provides a dual benefit: participants gain stable, full-time work experience, while local organisations receive vital personnel support to deliver their services.

A cornerstone of the JI programme is the Individual Learner Plan. Every participant is supported in identifying and accessing training that aligns with their future career goals, ensuring that their time on the scheme is a stepping stone to further success.

Following national policy changes in late 2004, there is currently no new recruitment onto the Job Initiative. Existing participants continue to have their contracts renewed annually in accordance with Department of Social Protection guidelines.

We understand the importance of financial security. While employed on the Job Initiative, participants are generally entitled to retain their secondary benefits, including:

  • Medical Cards
  • Child Dependent Allowances (where applicable)
